Welcome to Doctoral studies in psychology!

The call for a new generation of doctoral students has just been announced. We invite prospective students to study the Quick guide and conditions of enrollment, as well as the organization of the doctoral study of psychology at our faculty.

We would like to seize this opportunity to inform all of our alumni, present and future PhD students, that our doctoral study has successfully passed the process of international accreditation and was issued a confirmation of fulfillment of the requirements to implement the doctoral program, in June 2018.

Based on the self-analysis conducted in 2017, and recommendations given by the international committee, we have made changes to the study program. These changes are in the process of approval, so we expect for the new generation to study according to the program characterized by a higher rate of electiveness of courses and work methodology, and individual approach to the needs and interests of a particular candidate.

Teachers and supervisors in our doctoral program are active scientists in diverse areas in psychology, distinguished by their high scientific productivity, international recognition, and fine teaching competencies.  In addition to 25 teachers from the Department of Psychology, our team of teachers and supervisors is enriched with scholars from the Department of Psychology of the University of Zadar, from other faculties at the University of Zagreb, and from the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb.

Doctoral students in psychology at the University of Zagreb have a wide range of research interests and different career paths. About half of our students work in academia, as researchers, research or teaching assistants, while others come from businesses, public and non-governmental sector. Therefore, our doctoral program is tailored to suit the needs of fully employed students. Students’ needs and satisfaction with the program, our teachers and supervisors are being continuously monitored and reports are passed on to students and teachers. After successful completion of the preparatory year, candidates with background in other disciplines are also eligible to apply and enroll in doctoral studies in psychology. Their rights and obligations are regulated by the University of Zagreb Rules of doctoral studies.

Individual work with supervisors and other faculty members makes the core of the studies. Depending on the needs and interests of students, we collaborate with scientists from other countries. Upon enrollment, a committee of advisors and an individual study program is suggested for each student. We encourage good working relations between students and faculty members and promote collaboration among students. Commitment to research, openness to collaboration, innovation and scientific productivity are highly appreciated. We encourage students in their research endeavors; publication of scientific papers and participation in scientific conferences, as well as participation in student exchange programs. Our doctoral students are exempt from registration fees for the two largest international psychology conferences, held biannually in Croatia: Ramiro and Zoran Bujas' Days and Psychology Days in Zadar.

Doctoral studies represent the highest level of academic education. Upon its successful completion, you will earn the academic title of the Doctor of Social Sciences, in the field of psychology. In other words, you will have developed competencies necessary to conduct research leading to new findings, and gained knowledge and skills needed to perform even the most complex tasks in your practice and applied work.
